Sun will be directly over the latitudes of Sri Lanka during the period starting from August 27 until September 7th, 2019, as it’s movements begin from the Northern hemisphere to the Southern hemisphere, the Department of Meteorology said yesterday.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Duty Meteorologist Kasun Paskuwel said the sun will be over the towns of Nachchikuda, Murukandi, Alankulam and Pirappuvedduvan today. “The sun is coming directly over the country twice a year. The first week of April due to ‘Equinox’ and the first week September will mark the ‘Equilux’ as the sun moves towards the southern hemisphere from the northern hemisphere and it will become directly over us. We feel very hot in April because no clouds could be seen at that time but at the end of August that would be very cloudy and windy. Therefore, people do not feel the warmth,” Mr.Paskuwel said.
However, Showers or thundershowers would occur in Western, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Southern and North-western provinces, he said.
Light showers may occur in Anuradhapura district, Mr.Paskuwel said. Meanwhile, Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Uva province and Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m. “Heavy falls about 100 mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Wind speed can be increased up to 50 Kmph at times in Northern and North-Central provinces and Puttalam, Trincomalee and Hambantota districts,” Mr. Paskuwel added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
