United National Party (UNP) lawyers are attempting to count preferential votes received by party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe based on an unlawful and unscientific premise, the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) claimed.

This is against a backdrop of the UNP not securing 5% of the vote cast in the Colombo district, the minimum percentage required to qualify for a seat in parliament, a statement signed by SJB General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara said.

Expressing his party’s vehement opposition to the alleged move, Bandara said the SJB has lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission and will pursue legal action against it. (Colombo/Aug6/2020)
