THOUSANDS of homes were left without power as thunderstorms lashed parts of South Australia on Tuesday evening.

At its peak early on Tuesday evening more than 9000 properties across the state suffered outages. Power was cut to 3300 properties in Pasadena, Tonsley, St Marys, Mitchell Park and Clovelly Park. Henley Beach, Fulham Gardens, Kidman Park and Lockleys were also plunged into darkness.

While on the Yorke Peninsula, power outages affected 3829 properties in towns including Port Vincent, Minlaton, Yorketown.

SA Power Networks has been investigating the cause of the outages and has determined that some have been caused by lightning strikes. Power was reconnected to some properties as early as 10pm in suburban Adelaide areas while other areas had to wait until about 1am.
